Dr. Michael Olumide Gbala serves as the acting Chief Medical Director of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Ondo (UNIMEDTH).
Dr. Gbala is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist specializing in Materno-fetal and Gynaecologic imaging. With a profound clinical acumen, adept medical administration skills, and accreditation as a Chartered Human Resources Manager, he also serves as a clergy. He is a visionary leader and a team player.
His educational journey includes a degree in medicine and surgery from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, followed by postgraduate medical residency training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital. He obtained membership and fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and is also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS). Dr. Gbala is esteemed as an examiner at both membership and fellowship levels for the West African College of Surgeons. Additionally, he holds a Certificate in Leadership and Management in Health from the University of Washington.
A fellow of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management (FCIHRM), Dr. Gbala’s expertise extends to human resource consulting, and he is a Professional Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (AMCIPM). His commitment to holistic development is evidenced by his Diploma in Theology from The Redeemed Bible College.
Dr. Gbala’s impact on the University of Medical Sciences and UNIMEDTH in Ondo State is substantial. As one of the four pioneer consultants at the Medical Village in Ondo, which later evolved into the University of Medical Sciences and UNIMEDTH, his contributions have been pivotal. Notably, he spearheaded the innovative Medical Students and Graduate Medical Students observership program during his tenure as CMAC. He played a crucial role as the pioneer Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Medical Sciences Ondo and facilitated the inaugural short course certificate training for the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI) of the University of Benin, hosted at the University of Medical Sciences Ondo.
Moreover, he chaired the committee that advocated for the expansion of Mother and Child care services across all senatorial districts in Ondo State. He served as the secretary for the Technical Working Group of Ondo state”s Inter-ministerial committee for COVId -19 during the pandemic. Dr Gbala’s scholarly endeavours include several published articles in peer-reviewed journals, alongside his mentorship of numerous resident doctors and healthcare professionals, both locally and internationally.
His collaborative efforts with various local and international entities have furthered the objectives of the Teaching Hospital. Dr. Gbala is a respected speaker at local and international conferences and also known for his compassionate patient care. Presently, he serves as the UNIMEDTHC Medical Village Site Coordinator for the ongoing WHO ACTION 3 trial.
A member of several medical and administrative professional bodies, Dr. Gbala is a fervent advocate for women and child health, instrumental in shaping policy development and implementation. He has dedicated the last two decades of his career to combating maternal mortality.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Dr. Gbala is a devout Christian and holds the position of Assistant Pastor in Charge of Province, Administration (APICP Admin) at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ondo Province 2. He is happily married to Pastor Mrs. Gbala Patience, and their union is blessed with children.
